CONFIRMED
Sony has a new, cheaper-looking PS5 on the way, but most players will never be able to buy one. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black launches in Japan on November 19 for ¥55,000 including tax, roughly $350, and it is region-locked to Japanese accounts. Pre-orders were scheduled to start October 20 at Japanese PlayStation retailers and online stores.
What we know
Video Games Chronicle reports that Sony announced the Midnight Black Digital Edition on October 13, 2026, via the official PlayStation Blog. It is a Japan-only model with a November 19 release date.
Gematsu, reporting Sony’s announcement, says Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia is releasing the model under the name “Midnight Black (Console Language: Japanese Only)” for ¥55,000 including tax. Gematsu also reports that pre-orders were scheduled to begin October 20. That confirms the schedule, though we haven’t seen a major outlet report on the pre-order opening itself.
The region lock is the big catch. According to Gematsu, the console only works with the system language set to Japanese and a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan. That matches the rules on the earlier Japan-only model, the CFI-2200B01, which Notebookcheck and Gaming.net report Sony announced on November 12, 2025, and released on November 21, 2025, at the same ¥55,000 price.
VGC converts the price to about $350. That is an exchange-rate figure, not a Sony US price. There is no US price because there is no US release.
A matching Midnight Black disc drive launches the same day. Push Square reports that the only change is the colour of the casing and the bundled DualSense, and Gematsu puts the drive at ¥11,980.
If you just want the look, VGC notes Sony already sells a Midnight Black console cover in the West for $54 / £45.
What is rumored
VGC’s background reporting says the Japan-only PS5 is believed to sell at a loss, as part of an effort to win back Japanese players. VGC is a reliable outlet, but this is framed as belief, and Sony has not confirmed it.
The original Japan-only model also had a rumor trail. Notebookcheck reported in 2025 that a single Chinese retailer had suggested a region-locked digital PS5 at around ¥50,000. That rumor was right about a cheaper, locked model and wrong on price by about ¥5,000.
What we don’t know yet

Sony has not said whether the Midnight Black Digital Edition, or any similar budget model, will come to the West. VGC says it is confirmed only for Japan so far.
Some outlets have offered explanations for the pricing. Tech Times framed it as a strategy by Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino against the Nintendo Switch 2, while EGW News and LevelUp pointed to tariffs, trade policy or Japanese inventory shortages. No Sony statement or major outlet supports any of these, so treat them as unverified commentary. A claim from Radazoid that the region-locked model first arrived in November 2024 is also wrong. VGC, Gaming.net and Notebookcheck all date it to November 2025.
Gadget Review and Gaming.net report that November 19 is also GTA VI’s release date. We haven’t verified that date with a primary outlet.
What it means
For players in Japan, this is a fresh colour on a model that is already priced well below PS5 hardware elsewhere. For everyone else, it’s a look at a cheaper PS5 you can’t realistically use. Importing one means running your console in Japanese on a Japanese PSN account, which cuts you off from your existing library and store.
The more interesting signal is that Sony is still backing a dedicated budget SKU for Japan a year after the first one. Until Sony says otherwise, though, Western buyers shouldn’t expect a matching price cut. If the black finish is the draw, the $54 cover is the practical route.
