PS5 owners report disc games asking for updates, but Sony hasn’t confirmed a new rule

RUMOR

Some PS5 owners say their disc games are stopping at a system update prompt before launch, and the claim is spreading fast on social media. Sony has not commented, and its own support documentation shows that disc-triggered update prompts are an existing feature rather than a new policy. Here is what is actually confirmed, what is still rumor, and what offline disc players should keep in mind.

What we know

Sony’s official PlayStation Support page says PS5 users get notified of new system software updates when the console is online, or when they insert a game disc that needs a later system software version to play. A disc asking for an update is documented behavior, and has been for a while.

PlayStation Support also says that after inserting a PS4 game disc into a PS5, “You may need to download an update.” That line covers game and system updates in general.

On the firmware side, Push Square, citing the official PlayStation website, reports that Sony released PS5 system software 26.07-14.20.00 on October 21, 2026. The single patch note reads: “We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.” It says nothing about disc launching, disc authentication or security fixes. Vice also reported the October 21 release date.

The update before that, 26.06-14.10.00, had official notes listing security fixes plus performance and stability improvements, according to Push Square, which reported it as a phased release.

Updates on first setup are also nothing new. Notebookcheck, citing the PlayStation Blog, notes that Sony’s FAQ has said a day-one system software update is required on first use since the PS5 launched in 2020.

What is rumored

The current wave started with Pirat_Nation, a social aggregator account on X with a mixed track record. Its October 24 post, relayed by Happy Gamer, GameGPU and Xbox Dynasty, says players who already own their discs are being asked for a system update before they can play, and frames it as physical games becoming dependent on firmware. Several players reportedly posted screenshots, but no outlet we rely on has verified them. Happy Gamer says Sony hasn’t commented and it’s unclear whether this is a required firmware check or a one-off bug.

GameGPU separately reports on one anonymous Polish user whose disc launch was interrupted by an update prompt. According to that account, the message cited online features and continued console operation, and offered to update now or postpone. GameGPU’s headline calls the update “mandatory,” but the report itself does not show that every disc launch is blocked or that offline play is impossible.

Some sites, including Playfront and MP1st, have speculated that the prompts are Sony’s response to the “Relapse” jailbreak exploit or tied to GTA 6 launch security. That is guesswork, not reporting. Vice points out that Sony’s patch notes don’t identify an exploit fix or mention GTA 6. An unverified Push Square reader comment also claims installed games are blocked until the user updates.

Twisted Voxel claims 14.10 became a requirement for PlayStation Network access, and Playfront says 14.20 is needed for online services and new releases. Neither claim has been verified by an outlet we trust.

What we don’t know yet

Nobody has named which games are triggering the prompts or which firmware versions the affected consoles were running. We also don’t know what happens after a player postpones the update, and whether the game then launches offline. Sony has not said whether anything changed on its end.

What it means

Based on the evidence so far, there is no confirmed new rule. A disc asking for newer system software matches what Sony already documents, and 14.20 announced no disc changes.

The reports are landing at a touchy moment for physical ownership. Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it will end physical disc production for new releases from January 2028. That context explains why these posts are getting so much attention.

If you play offline, keep it practical. If a prompt appears, note the game and your current firmware version, and check whether a postpone option is offered. If you can connect occasionally, keeping system software current is the simplest way to avoid prompts tied to newer discs. We’ll update this story if Sony or a reliable outlet confirms anything more.
