What we know

Sony first announced the Pulse and the pricier Pulse Edge on 15 September in a PlayStation Blog post by Joe Bentley, SIE VP of Engineering. That post had no price or date. Sony updated it on 21 October with the details for the standard Pulse.

Price and colours. Engadget reports the Pulse comes in white and midnight black for $99.99. That is $50 less than the Pulse Elite, which Engadget says launched in 2024 at around $149.

Pre-orders. The PlayStation Blog says players in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg can pre-order direct from PlayStation from 10:00am local time on 29 October. Secondary coverage of the blog update puts the US start at 7:00am PT through direct.playstation.com. Push Square notes the blog also lists “participating retailers” alongside PlayStation Direct.

Launch. Engadget reports the Pulse ships 19 November in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and more than a dozen other countries. Sony says dates for countries not on that list will come later.

Hardware. Push Square, reporting the PlayStation Blog, describes the Pulse as a revamped take on the Pulse Elite with larger planar drivers. It connects over PS Link to PS5 and PS Portal, also supports Bluetooth, and has an integrated mic with AI-powered noise cancelling.

The PlayStation Blog’s spec table shows where Sony cut corners to hit the price. The Pulse uses 4 magnets per planar driver and has no active noise cancellation. The Pulse Edge doubles that to 8 magnets and adds ANC, a carrying case, a 3.5mm audio/mic jack and PS5 game/chat balance control.

One correction going around: Gagadget called the Pulse “Sony’s first full-size PlayStation-branded gaming headset.” That’s wrong. The PlayStation Blog says the Pulse Elite arrived in 2024 as Sony’s first wireless headset with planar magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link, and Engadget also calls the Pulse Elite Sony’s first planar magnetic headset. The new Pulse refreshes an existing line.

What we don’t know yet

Sony hasn’t put a price on the Pulse Edge, and the PlayStation Blog doesn’t list a launch date for it.

Sony’s update, as reported, doesn’t spell out what the Pulse does for PS5 3D audio beyond its PS Link connection. We also don’t have battery life figures in the confirmed details, so wait for reviews on both points.

Release dates for regions outside the 19 November list are still to come, per Sony.

What it means

For PS5 players who wanted planar magnetic audio and PS Link but balked at the Pulse Elite’s price, this is the more accessible way in. Planar drivers are the headline feature carried over from the Elite, and Push Square reports they’re larger here, though the PlayStation Blog table shows fewer magnets per driver than the Edge. How that plays out in actual sound is something only hands-on testing will settle.

The trade-offs are clear on paper. No ANC and no 3.5mm jack mean the Pulse is built around wireless play on PS5 and Portal, with Bluetooth for other devices. If you need noise cancellation or a wired option, the Edge looks like the better fit, but you’ll be waiting on a price.

Timing is the other story. Push Square reported that 19 November is also the launch day for Rockstar’s GTA 6. Sony hasn’t said the overlap is deliberate, but anyone planning a big launch-day setup now has a $99.99 audio option landing the same day.

If you want one early, set a reminder for 10:00am local time on 29 October and check PlayStation Direct first.
