The Elden Ring map starts almost completely blank. Each region only fills in after you pick up its map fragment from a stone stele, usually placed beside the main road. This guide lists every region of the Lands Between and the Realm of Shadow, names the fragment that reveals it, and explains where to look so you stop riding through grey fog.
How Elden Ring maps work
Each fragment is a separate item. You get it by interacting with a weathered stone stele, after which the camera pans briefly over the newly revealed terrain. The fragment shows roads, rivers, cliffs and named landmarks, but it does not add Sites of Grace, dungeons or bosses. You discover those by exploring, and you can mark them yourself with the map’s marker tools.
The game has three map layers. The surface of the Lands Between is one. The underground river system beneath it is a second, reached through the underground toggle shown at the bottom of the map screen. The Realm of Shadow from Shadow of the Erdtree is a third, and it uses its own fragments.
Quick steps: reveal a region
- Ride the main road into the new region.
- Look for a tall stone pillar beside the road.
- Interact with it to collect the fragment.
- Press the touchpad to view the revealed map.
Every Lands Between region and its fragment
| Region | Map fragment(s) | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Limgrave | Limgrave, West / Limgrave, East | Gatefront Ruins; the road skirting the Mistwood toward Fort Haight |
| Weeping Peninsula | Weeping Peninsula, West / East | Main roads south of the Bridge of Sacrifice |
| Liurnia of the Lakes | Liurnia, East / North / West | Eastern cliff road after Stormveil, then the northern and western shores |
| Caelid | Caelid | Main road through southern Caelid |
| Dragonbarrow | Dragonbarrow | Western Dragonbarrow, along the road north |
| Altus Plateau | Altus Plateau | Plateau roads after you climb up from Liurnia |
| Mt. Gelmir | Mt. Gelmir | Near the Ninth Mt. Gelmir Campsite |
| Leyndell, Royal Capital | Leyndell, Royal Capital | Capital outskirts, before the main gate |
| Mountaintops of the Giants | West / East | Near Zamor Ruins, then farther east along the road |
| Consecrated Snowfield | Consecrated Snowfield | Inside the snowfield itself |
| Siofra River | Siofra River | Underground, along the river |
| Ainsel River | Ainsel River | Underground, Ainsel River main area |
| Deeproot Depths | Deeproot Depths | Underground, among the giant roots |
| Mohgwyn Palace | Mohgwyn Palace | The approach to the palace |
Stormhill sits inside the Limgrave, West fragment, and the Ashen Capital reuses the Leyndell fragment. Crumbling Farum Azula and Miquella’s Haligtree have no fragment at all, so you navigate those areas by graces alone.
Player tip
Stele locations often show up on the blank map as faint road lines you have already walked, so follow your own trail back to the widest road.
Realm of Shadow fragments
To reach the shadow realm, you need to defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, then touch the withered arm on the cocoon in Mohgwyn Palace. The Realm of Shadow covers the Gravesite Plain, Scadu Altus, Shadow Keep, the Cerulean Coast, the Jagged Peak, the Abyssal Woods and the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
| DLC fragment | Covers |
|---|---|
| Gravesite Plain | Starting area and Castle Ensis |
| Scadu Altus | Central highlands around Shadow Keep |
| Southern Shore | Southern coast, including the Cerulean Coast |
| Rauh Ruins | The ruined western plateau |
| Abyss | The Abyssal Woods |
Heads up
Entering the Realm of Shadow does not lock you out of the base game. You can switch maps and fast travel back at any time.
Interactive maps versus in-game fragments
Fan-built interactive maps such as MapGenie mark every item, grace and boss across both realms. The in-game fragments reveal terrain, roads and environmental features for each region, but not items or bosses. Discovering by eye is the way the game was designed, though, and fragments are cheap to find once you know they hug the roads. Hollow Knight fans will notice the Silksong map works on a different system, where you buy maps rather than read them off pillars.
FAQ
Does the map fragment show Sites of Grace?
No. Fragments reveal terrain and landmark names. Graces appear once you discover and activate them.
Why is my underground map blank?
Underground areas like Siofra River use their own fragments and a separate map layer. Switch to the underground view on the map screen and find the stele down there.
Can you miss a map fragment?
No fragment is permanently missable, although region changes in Leyndell can alter the route you take to reach the stele.
